[USA TODAY] — IRENE, South Africa — Four years ago, after a loss to Ghana ended the USA’s World Cup in the first round, Landon Donovan stood on the field in disbelief. With his jersey on the ground and his hands on his knees, he leaned over and stared at the grass, shocked by the finality of the moment.

“That was not a good day for me or for the team,” Donovan said Thursday. “What I remember is my tentativeness and immediate feeling afterward, the finality of that and how disappointing that was.”

On Saturday, the USA faces Ghana for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals. This time, Donovan doesn’t want to let the opportunity pass. “This is a chance to do something very special,” he said.
